I Turned My Resin Color Failures Into a Guide

There is a particular kind of silence in the studio when a color does something it was not supposed to do.

A bottle says green.

The color looks green on the toothpick. It looks green when it first touches the resin. Then I stir it into a deeper casting and watch it turn blue.

Not slightly blue.

Blue.

That was one of the experiments behind Emerald Ice, but it was not the only one. Glacier and Aquamarine came out so similar that there was no real reason for both to exist. One Emerald pour looked beautiful while the resin was moving through the mold, then cured into a solid green sphere with nowhere left for the light to travel.

I kept thinking about how much of resin color is usually explained as a list of drops.

Add two drops of blue. Add one drop of green. Stir.

But translucent color does not really work that way.

The cup is not the finished piece

A color can look pale in a mixing cup and become much darker inside a two-inch orb.

A green can shift toward blue.

A tiny amount of pigment can disappear in a shallow mold and completely overpower a deep casting.

The shape matters.

The depth matters.

The background matters.

Even the object placed inside the resin matters.

The Aurora Borealis Orb works because the green does not fill the entire sphere. The color moves through clear resin in ribbons, leaving openings where light can enter and the pattern can change as the orb is turned.

The Hydrangea Orb needs almost the opposite approach. The flower is already carrying color, texture, and shadow. The resin has to create atmosphere around it without burying the petals inside a colored ball.

Those two pieces may both use translucent color, but the color is doing a completely different job in each one.

That is what I wanted this guide to explain.

Light, Held

Why I made it

I could have waited until every Ice Collection color was perfect.

But that would leave out the most useful part.

The finished piece only shows the answer.

The tests show how the answer was found.

Emerald taught me that a pigment name is not a promise.

Glacier taught me that two individually beautiful colors can still fail when they are placed beside each other.

The Aurora Borealis Orb taught me that clear space is not empty space.

The Hydrangea Orb taught me that color does not always need to be the subject.

Sometimes it needs to step back and let something else be seen.

That is the real subject of Light, Held: not simply how to make resin colorful, but how to create color that still allows the piece to have depth.

The hardest part is knowing when to stop

Most translucent color failures do not begin with too little pigment.

They happen after the artist sees something subtle and worries that it will disappear.

So we add another drop.

Then another.

Eventually the color is unmistakable, but the light is gone.

I have done that more than once.

The more I work with translucent resin, the more I realize that the answer is often subtraction:

Less pigment.

Less stirring.

Less colored resin.

More clear space.

More room around the flower.

More patience before deciding the color is too pale.

The purpose of translucent resin is not only to be seen.

It is to let us see into it.

That is where the depth lives.

That is where clear resin becomes Glacier, where green becomes an aurora moving through a sphere, and where a hydrangea feels preserved rather than buried.
